When I was a teacher in Korea for the Christmas performance of one of my classes we had them sing ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham. Trying to teach five six year old boys who spoke English as a second language the lyrics, a dance and coordinating it all was definitely a handful. Luckily my co-teacher and girlfriend at the time was quite the taskmaster and whipped those kids into shape.
Even till this day over a decade later I still remember the song and experiences fondly and think about it every time Christmas rolls around and the speakers start playing Last Christmas.
I still believe that music is one of the greatest gifts that God gave to man.
Hearing of the passing of George Michael at such a young age was quite a shock to me. I wish his friends and family the best, as well as the world. George Michael was truly a unique talent and lived his life to the fullest being the person that he wanted to be.
I remember him from the Wham! days and even remember having a vinyl copy of their record which my sisters adored. In middle and high school with a teenager’s heartbreaks and angst I remember his music well and as I got older his music seemed to evolve as well from the pop melodies and ballads to something more mature and sure of itself. He truly was a gifted writer, who was never ashamed to bear his soul for the world to hear in his music.
I’ve achieved what every artist wants, which is that some of their work will outlive them.
With his passing the world will be a bit less bright, but his music will always live on.
