Song of the Day~ “The Scientist” by Willie Nelson

“The Scientist” is originally off of the rock band Coldplay’s second album A rush of Blood to the Head released in 2002. It is one of their greatest hit songs and one of my favorites from their repertoire. I recently heard the cover by Willie Nelson and enjoyed it quite a bit. Instead of the clean high falsetto’s and piano that made the original stand out it had a nice country feel with acoustic guitar and the mature thoughtful voice of Willie Nelson. While not as amazing as the “Hurt” cover by Johnnie Cash it was nice to hear one of my favorite songs done with a different feel.

I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Only if love were as easy as chemistry… oh wait I failed chemistry…

With the rise of Spotify I’ve noticed a much larger exposure of cover songs and have enjoyed it. Hearing a song with a different tone and feel and sometimes in a completely different style usually helps me appreciate it more. While Willie Nelson might not be the image most people imagine when thinking of a scientist he can still sing a song with passion and emotion without forcing it. I think that’s the same thing that made the Johnnie Cash cover so amazing. Hearing matured voices with decades of practice showing that emotion isn’t about volume, but of nuance.

Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are
