Song of the Day~ – “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by the Beatles

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was released in 1968 by the Beatles in their double-album titled the Beatles (better known as the White Album. While I do love their version of the song, I’ll be focusing on three covers. The first was performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 by Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others. The term All-Star band would be lacking to describe the performers here. Some of the greatest rock icons of the 20th century performing a great classic together. Prince is at the end of line of great guitarists and doesn’t really make his presence known till the end of the song, but reminds us how great of a guitarist that he really was. With his passing in 2016 we’ve really lost one of the most talented musicians of my generation. There really wasn’t any single aspect that he wasn’t superbly talented and would have been a legend for any single area of contribution. Whether it be as a song writer, performer, producer, mentor, vocalist, guitarist, etc. He will truly be missed.

I don’t know why nobody told you
How to unfold your love
I don’t know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you

The second version of the song is from the movie “Kubo and the Two Strings” performed by Regina Spektor. It’s a nice twist with the addition of classical Asian instruments to replace the electric guitar and solos that we’re used to. Regardless of the instrument or instruments used the song retains it’s clean yet powerful feel. A female vocalist also helps maintain the purity of the song.

I look at the world and I notice it’s turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

The final version is by Carlos Santana with vocals by India Arie. Out of the great guitarists of all time Santana is truly one of those that can make a guitar weep. Each note when played by Santana has enough emotion and feel to match and surpass (sorry) the vocals of the song. Listening to him play with various vocalists over the years it really is amazing how much depth a guitar can have.

I don’t know how you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don’t know how you were inverted
No one alerted you

While not one of the first songs that pops into my mind when I think about the Beatles the more I hear “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” I’ve grown to love it more and more. The lyrics may not have the initial impact of “Let it Be” or “Yesterday” the combination of music and lyrics show why the Beatles were one of the greatest bands of all time.

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
Look at you all
Still my guitar gently weeps

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” shows that a great song regardless of how it’s presented can still be great and have so many different emotions pouring out of it.
