Unseen, Unknown, Unexperienced

The monsters under the bed, in the dark waiting for us. The unknown lands across the sea that drove us. The possibilities of the future, the fears and hopes that haunt us.

We can plan for obstacles that we see before us, we can understand the known to the point where there is no fear or surprises. It is the the unknown the unseen that pushes us either backwards or forwards. The shock and surprise can send us reeling and the curiosity is what drives us forward. The mysteries of the universe and the desire to solve them are the driving factors that allows us to make advances in leaps and bounds in science, technology and understanding, however they are also the chains that keep us anchored firmly to the ground. Fear of the unknown and unseen, keep us on the safe path. Fear and worry keep us bound to the ground.

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
― André Gide

In recent years with pioneers like Elon Musk pushing the idea of travelling to Mars in our lifetime came to being, there were two reactions: some were excited at the possibility of travelling to and exploring the unknown while others had the opposite reaction and wanted to keep their feet firmly planted on the Earth. Both see the possibilities of the unknown, but one type of person sees it in awe and curiosity while the other feels only fear. When new opportunities and challenges are set before us we have the option to seek the unknown or to run away from it and hide in the comfort of the known.

It is the unseen that catches us off guard and by surprise, but also the unknown that gives us chances to try something new and exciting. While the unseen, unheard, unexperienced may bring disappointment or even suffering it is the unseen that can change who we are into something completely new.

“Nothing is so dangerous to the progress of the human mind than to assume that our views of science are ultimate, that there are no mysteries in nature, that our triumphs are complete and that there are no new worlds to conquer.”
― Humphry Davy

The unseen is change and change is the way of things. Don’t shy away from the dangers, but every once in awhile take the plunge you might like what’s on the other side.
